About Supervision

This is a resource that discusses key issues in supervision and supports the development of effective practice, by both supervisor and supervisee. You can work through it, combining it with activities based on the video clips, or you can read it before or after working through the video clips.

Its aim is to stimulate ideas and reflections on practice to help you develop critical awareness of what your needs are in relation to giving and receiving supervision and how these are best met. It will also help you develop your own internal supervisor, which is never a substitute for regular supervision, but is an important aspect of developing critical practice and professional resilience.

There are five themes. You can work through them in any order you wish, depending on your experience and interests although it is recommended that you work on themes one and two first as these provide the basis for other work.

Theme 1: Reflection noticing, thinking and questioning

Theme 2: The value of supervision

Theme 3: Effective supervision

Theme 4: Stories from practice: risk and protection; stress and resilience

Theme 5: Creative approaches to supervision: Skills, knowledge and values
